How can screens be effectively balanced in a Montessori classroom during the current times?

The only environment in which screens should be available is in an elementary, ideally 9-12 class, where they are to be used for research, writing reports, etc..  In no other environment should screens be used as they are not developmentally appropriate. Montessori environments are prepared with materials designed to address the needs of children of a particular age range (0-3, 2.5 – 6+, 6-12).  Montessori is one of the few approaches that continue to value the importance of the work of the hand: manipulative materials lead a child to the understanding of abstract concepts, work with these materials can be repeated as often as desired and progressively builds understanding and the interconnectedness of many academic areas. As many children will have the availability of screens in their own homes, they will not be computer illiterate, but screens are not needed in Montessori environments except for the doing of research and writing by older children.
