Margaret E. Stephenson

It is with deep sadness that AMI announces the death of Margaret E. Stephenson. Her health had been deteriorating for the past few years and she became ill with pneumonia. Mercifully she did not have to suffer long. She died at 1:15 p.m. April 28th. It is comforting to know that her remarkably sharp mind remained bright until her last moments, allowing us to retain an unsullied memory of her intelligence, her wit and her wisdom.

Betty was one of the last pillars of the Old Guard. Trained by Maria Montessori, working closely with Mario Montessori, she was for more than half a century one of the staunchest, most consistent and enduring proponents of Montessori principles and practice of - in her own words - "Maria Montessori's Montessori."

May her incomparable contribution to the good of many, many people, past, present and future be rewarded as she deserved, finding the heaven she so wonderfully envisioned - a place where all knowledge denied conscious, wisdom-seeking earthlings will be attainable. May her spirit continue to flourish, in our thoughts and in her heaven.
