This is a year of celebrating many nines.
1999 is the last year of our century and our millennium. It is also the 70th anniversary of the foundation of the AMI in 1929 in Elsinore, Denmark and it is the 90th anniversary of Maria Montessori's first course held at the Villa Montesca, Italy in 1909.
Outstanding events require a heightening of image. Traditionally, we tend to dress up for important occasions; we wear ceremonial garb at significant functions; we deck our halls with boughs of holly, or flower garlands depending on the time, place and season; we light torches or candles or crystal chandeliers and we sing, dance, and march; we compose beautiful music - sacred, profane, pompous, martial, solemn, lilting and joyful - to entwine our souls into the celebration.
However enjoyable it may be to entertain the thought, it is difficult to gather the membership of AMI for one great, resounding, festive party with pipes and drums and clashing of cymbals, in honour of the many nines and that which they represent.
Yet, miracle of miracles, thanks to the technologies that have grown so exponentially at the end of this millennium, the last decades of this century, there exists a virtual realm where we can all meet and celebrate. This is the AMI web site, all decked out in new finery - a new style, a new image, new colours.
We trust all visitors will find it pleasing and useful. We hope it will become an incentive to contribute to AMI's endeavours. We expect to hear from you and wish you all possible good now and into the future, that no doubt will be endlessly interesting, intriguing and fascinating.
